The Oscars: Red Carpet Fashion

Jessica Alba at the OscarsFor me, award season isn’t about who walks away with a statuette - it’s about what they’re wearing when they’re doing it. Who looked great? Who should have stayed home? And who stole the show away from the actual show? That’s right - it’s time for the red carpet round up.

Pregnant arrived on the red carpet in a dark maroon, empress-cut waisted dress that gave her baby bump plenty of room. Everything was okay but the top of the dress, which exploded in a profusion of feathers that made her gown look less like couture and more like curtains haphazardly wrapped around her body.

wore a double-stranded necklace that somehow didn’t complement her shell-colored ball gown. The color wasn’t right for Keri, and the unembellished look didn’t quite reach the elegant look Russell was no doubt going for.

Hilary Swank was gorgeous in a one-shouldered black creation, a long trail dragging behind her. The two-time Oscar winner may not be one of my favorites - but she sure can dress! The same can’t be said of , whose odd violet gown was a complete mess. The dress was too short, the necklace was awful, the cut wasn’t flattering at all to Cate…and what’s with that weird flower pattern on the skirt?

was stunning in bright red (the color of the night), which was also cut in the popular single-shoulder fashion. She looked elegant and Oscar-ready, more than what I can say of many actresses in attendance. was a complete mess in her coral-colored gown - and why didn’t she fix her hair?

could have been enchanting in emerald green, but coupled with a gold bag (bad choice) and her dark red locks, it somehow didn’t suit her. The cut of the dress seemed to work more against her body than with it. Young Hannah Montana star was not at all age-appropriate in bold red - and the earrings were a terrible choice, too.

Renee Zellweger looked chic and sexy in shimmering silver dress with a long split near the front showing off miles of legs. was perfectly accessorized and apart from the pack in bright white.

was a total knockout in her red creation, but the weird feather embellishment on the shoulder kept the dress from being a total hit. Calista Flockhart, on Harrison Ford’s arm, looked like she was wearing a toga in blue and grey. Blue and grey? How unflattering.

star Ellen Page looked somewhat frumpy in her black spaghetti-strapped dress. And, Ellen? Don’t wear that necklace again. I’m serious. Take a page from ’s fashion book instead. The queenly star looked lovely in bright red, but the odd lacework on the shoulders sort of ruined the effect.

No mistakes with ’s wardrobe. It was impossible to look away from her stunning red creation, which had a collar to emphasize her upswept hair and perfect face. The gown will go to charity now that the Oscars are all over.

’s simply elegant silky black gown was a success, but the overpowering necklace she paired it with spelled disaster. Tilda Swinton was a complete nightmare in her velvety black gown, which left one arm exposed and quite honestly looked like someone just threw fabric at her.

Faye Dunaway, one of my favorite stars, was amazing in an age-appropriate golden gown. She should give tips to Miley Cyrus. was also eye-popping in her extravagant black gown, embellished enough already so Cruz knew not to go overboard with jewelry.
