VIDEO: Liam Neeson Hugging Supporters on Broadway
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies
Many stars came out to remember Natasha Richardson last night - including members of her own family.
At approximately 8:00, the marquee lights on Broadway were dimmed briefly for the Tony award-winning actress. Although his appearance outside the Booth Theatre was brief, a somber Liam Neeson took time out to hug several friends including actors Ron Rifkin, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. Richardon’s mother, Vanessa Redgrave, and sister, Joely Richardson, were also in attendance.

Former Bosses File Grievance Against Jeremy Piven
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Television, Legal Issues
Despite a calculated sit-down with Diane Sawyer last Thursday, Jeremy Piven can’t keep the doubters off his back.
Just weeks after exiting his stage production, the former Speed-the-Plow star has had a grievance filed against him by his former bosses. Although its unclear what the show’s producers hope to achieve with this action, the David Mamet play has taken a financial hit since Piven’s sudden departure.

Jeremy Piven’s Broadway Exit Felt at the Ticket Booth
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories:
Even if you’re having trouble buying Jeremy Piven‘s fishy excuse, there’s no denying the actor’s appeal.
Last week, the Entourage star abruptly pulled out of his Broadway engagement due to a reportedly high level of mercury. The producers of Speed-the-Plow were then forced to find last-minute find replacements for Piven’s role as Bobby Gould. (Norbert Butz began his stint on Tuesday; William H. Macy finishes the run starting January 11.)
Unfortunately, Jeremy’s absence has already had a huge effect on the production’s box office numbers. In the few days while Jordan Lage was substituting, ticket sales for the week fell nearly $160,000 to $326,559. The actors also performed to houses that were only half full. But Piven was, surprisingly, not missed. At least not by former co-star Raul Esparza.

Jeremy Piven Blames Sushi for Broadway Cancellation
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories:
Some celebrities blame vertigo for their absences, others chalk it up to simple “exhaustion.” But up until now, I doubt anyone has pleaded guilty to an overconsumption of sushi.
After missing several performances of Speed-the-Plow earlier this week (that’s the same play Madonna once starred in), Entourage star Jeremy Piven has abruptly left the Broadway production. A high level of mercury is apparently the reason for the Piven’s medical leave.
A twice-a-day sushi meal and a regular intake of Chinese herbs are believed to be the factors behind Jeremy’s illness. A high level of mercury can apparently lead to cause cardiac arrest, kidney failure, even psychiatric problems
After hearing skeptical comments about Jeremy’s excuse (playwright David Mamet joked that his Piven was “leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer”), the actor’s physician came to his defense. According to Dr. Carlon Colker, the 43-year-old had been feeling ill for some time. When Colker discovered that Piven had a mercury level “almost six times the upper limit of normal and allowable,” he warned the producers back on December 10.

Katie Holmes Shows Off Her Designer Skills

Apparently too many tabloids admiring Katie Holmes‘s taste in fashion have completely gone to her head.
The Broadway star showed up to the Los Angeles premiere of Tropic Thunder in a dress that had everyone’s head turning; it’s very questionable as to whether or not they were good head turns, too. Turns out Katie decided to team up with her stylist Jeanne Yang to design the dress.
Personally, I think it looks entirely too homemade for someone that’s married to Tom Cruise. The fabrics and cut definitely don’t do her figure justice—it’s simply not a very flattering look for her short ‘do.

Katie Holmes: A Broadway Bomb?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies
And to think they bumped Mario Lopez for this…
Although Katie Holmes’ is apparently getting a sizable paycheck for her Broadway debut, ticket sales have reportedly been underwhelming. According to the New York Post, advance purchases for All My Sons have not yet reached the $1 million mark. In comparison, when Tom’s last wife (a.k.a. Nicole Kidman) hit the stage, The Blue Room raked in $4 million before opening night. (And that was at 1998 prices!)
Of course, both ladies have to take a back seat to Julia Roberts’ 2006 stint; tickets for Three Days of Rain were snapped up in just one day.
So if you have the free time and $300 to spare, it sounds like you may have your choice of seats to jump on this September.

Katie Holmes’ Paycheck Means a Smaller One for Mario Lopez
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies
While I’ve never been a huge fan of Ms. Holmes, I like to think of this as karma coming back to bite Mario in the ass.
In case you haven’t already heard the news, Katie Holmes has finally chosen to put Suri down and get back to work. (Seems her Mad Money gig wasn’t satisfying enough for her or anyone who watched it.) But instead of returning to the big screen, Holmes has chosen to make her Broadway debut in All My Sons, a revival of an Arthur Miller play.
So what does Katie’s decision have to do with Lopez? Well, in order to recoup the money for the publicity stunt the actress’ paycheck, the producers had to seek out a venue with more seats. Unfortunately, taking over the Schoenfeld Theater meant an early end to the show currently performing there: A Chorus Line starring Mario Lopez. Needless to say, Lopez is reportedly “pissed” by this news. (Oh, poor baby.)
You can expect lengthy reviews on Holmes’ performance this September.

Dancing with the Stars Couple Calls It Quits
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Television, Break-ups, Rumors
UPDATE: Karina Smirnoff is now denying People’s report about a supposed break-up. Maybe they just haven’t done it yet. Meanwhile, you can read about another DWTS split here.
It seems like someone is now free to pursue another Mario…
After nearly 1 1/2 years together, former Dancing with the Stars partners Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff have called it quits. The two - who competed together during the fall of 2006 - eventually placed second that season behind Cheryl Burke and Emmitt Smith.
Although the two moved in together last year, the couple have been spending a great deal of time apart recently. While Karina has been participating on DWTS’ Season 6, Lopez has been starring in a Broadway revival of A Chorus Line. He will also conveniently appear on the ABC show’s 100th episode next week. (I’m sure it was quite awkward backstage during that pre-taped performance.)
Up until recently, Karina and her current Mario have had to fend off rumors about a possible romance. (They said she already had a boyfriend.) What will their excuse be now?
