Conflicting Reports About Bernie Mac’s Health
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies, Television
UPDATE: As of August 7, Bernie is reportedly in stable condition and “responding well to treatment.“
Bernie Mac, the former star of The Bernie Mac Show, has been hospitalized for several days now for a case of pneumonia. Unfortunately, reports on how the comedian is faring varies from source to source.
This weekend, a rep for the Ocean’s Eleven star denied reports that the star had passed away. Publicist Danica Smith claimed the 50-year-old was responding well to treatment and was expected to go home soon. But a post in yesterday’s Chicago Sun-Times tells an entirely different story. A source close to the family tells the newspaper that Mac (a.k.a. Bernard McCullough) is actually in “very, very critical” condition.
Back in 2004, production on Mac’s FOX series halted while he was being treated for sarcoidosis. The chronic disease, which he had been diagnosed with earlier in his life, can inflame tissues. Although his hospitalization at that time had pneumonia ties, Smith says her client’s current medical issue is not sarcoidosis-reated.
Whatever the story, we sincerely wish Bernie a speedy recovery.

Angelina Jolie Doing Well in Hospital
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies, Celebrity Babies, Rumors
UPDATE: Entertainment Tonight has finally acknowledged that it was previously ‘given false information’ about the twins’ birth.
A news conference held earlier today told Entertainment Tonight something that program didn’t what to hear: Angelina Jolie has not had her babies…yet.
The media’s presence in the South of France has grown ever since the actress checked into the hospital earlier this week. But according to the facility’s rep, the 33-year-old’s stay had been “planned for a long time.“
During Tuesday’s presser in France, Jolie’s obstetrician told photographers they’ll have to patient if they want to stalk the family; the newborns will be welcomed sometime “in the weeks to come.“ In the meantime, outlets shouldn’t fill time speculating about Angelina’s current condition.
“Everything is normal. She is very well, and she’s okay. ... Brad and Angelina want everyone to know that everything is going well.“
So Mary Hart—do you think ET will finally get around to printing that retraction now?

Winehouse Still Smoking Despite Hospitalization
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Drugs
Although Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch, mistakenly claimed his daughter had emphysema, the singer is not exactly out of the woods.
In an attempt to clear up the erroneous report, reps clarified the 24-year-old’s health status. While Amy hasn’t yet been diagnosed with the irreversible lung disease, she does have “scarring of the lungs which could lead to emphysema.“ According to spin doctor Chris Goodman, “If she keeps doing the wrong things, then it could lead to it. If she does the right things, it won’t.“
Unfortunately, no amount of scarring could overcome Amy’s strong penchant for inhaling. During a brief release from the hospital yesterday (she’s been there since fainting last Monday), Winehouse was snapped by the paparazzi…with a cigarette in her mouth. Maybe she was just saying one last goodbye to the cigs? Maybe?

Amy Winehouse Diagnosed with Emphysema
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Drugs

UPDATE: Despite what Amy’s father told the media, the singer’s rep denies Winehouse has emphysema. She supposedly has a “scarring of the lungs which could lead to emphysema.“
After years of unhealthy living, it’s been determined that singer Amy Winehouse has the early stages of emphysema. This diagnosis was made after the 24-year-old collapsed at her home last Monday. A week of tests had ruled out other possibilities - such as tuberculosis - for her chest problems.
According to the Mayo Clinic, emphysema is “is a progressive lung disease that results in shortness of breath and reduces your capacity for physical activity.“ Unfortunately, Winehouse could have been suffering for some time and didn’t experience any symptoms “until irreversible damage” had already occurred.

Someone to Watch Over Britney
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Celebrity Babies, Meltdowns, Breaking News
It’s no secret that former pop star Britney Spears has had her fair share of troubles recently. She’s in a bitter custody battle with ex-hubby Kevin Federline, she’s been admitted to the hospital and she’s tragic media fodder. The latest reports say Brit will stay in the hospital for at least two weeks more, so now the whole issue has turned down a different path: who’s going to take care of Britney?
Father Jamie Spears was given control over Britney (and her various assets) when she was hospitalized, but all that may change at a Monday hearing. A neutral party, or a different relative, may gain control, according to sources close to the situation. There is also another custody-related hearing scheduled for Monday, the latest in a long string of court appearances which determine which parent will parent Britney’s two children. Unfortunately, it seems right now Spears isn’t capable of taking care of herself.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Seeks Hospital Treatment
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Television
Normally Cedars-Sinai is the hotbed for celebrity activity, but this week it turns out UCLA’s Medical Center is the place to be.
We’re learning that Justin Chambers, Dr. Alex Karev on Grey’s Anatomy, self-admitted himself into that facility earlier this week. This would be the same location Britney Spears is currently in.
The actor, who was at Sunday’s SAG Awards, apparently checked into the hospital’s psych ward the very next day. His rep told TMZ that Chambers was “exhausted and suffers from a sleeping disorder. He went in voluntarily to get some help.“ Fortunately, he left the hospital on Wednesday—just hours before before the Britney media onslaught began.
All I can say is….if I was a mother (or father) of five, a psych ward would be my second home.

Britney Spears Hospitalized Again
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Meltdowns, Videos, Breaking News
Another day, another hospitalization. Early Thursday morning, more drama unfolded outside Britney Spears‘ home. (You can see the video, after the jump.) And while the scene was strangely reminiscent of the January 4th incident, there were many things that made today’s events different.

- This was a planned event. Britney’s new psychiatrist - the one Sam Lufti referenced in his conversation with Barbara Walters - had apparently sensed this day would come. Realizing it would take a bit of work to get her to the hospital through a throng of photographers, etc., she worked out details with the LAPD. When the psychiatrist arrived at her home last night, she felt it was time to get her some help. With one phone call, she set the escort plan in action.
- Britney was a willing participant. No locked bathroom doors this time around. The singer - who reportedly hadn’t slept in three days - was very calm when police arrived.
- Her mother was actually there. Instead of hiding away in another state, Lynne Spears was in Britney’s home at the time of her departure (as was Lufti and Alli Sims).
- Another day, a new place. She was not taken to Cedars-Sinai this time. Today she’s at UCLA Medical Center.
- No K-Fed sighting. Since Kevin Federline already has the kids with him, there apparently wasn’t a need to be around.
- It looks like she might stick around. Although Brit never stayed the suggested 72-hours the last time she was hospitalized, it looks she might this time.
