Paris Hilton Threatens to Sue Billboard Company
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Movies, Television, Legal Issues, Photos, Rumors
Much like Woody Allen’s legal battle with American Apparel over the usage of an Annie Hall image, everyone’s favorite reality star heiress Paris Hilton is now finding herself in a similar battle after a New Zealand billboard firm slapped her face on one of their spaces.
On top of using her image without acquiring approval, the Media5 ad has “Vacant” written in large letters across the photo of her partying.
“Paris has a proven ability to laugh at herself. We assume that the agency has taken care of the rights to the image of Paris, but we will ask the question. We’re not trying to offend anyone,” spokesperson for Media 5, Adam McGregor, said.

After his wife Maria Shriver’s illegal cell phone usage on the road was publicly called out by TMZ, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger quickly responded on his Twitter, “Thanks for bringing her violations to my attention. There’s going to be swift action.”
Who knew that “swift action” meant hiring a driver instead of simply buying a bluetooth! Well, at least that’s one less unemployed person in the state—well done, Governator.

Weirdest Michael Jackson Lawsuit Ever?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Legal Issues
Helen Harris-Scott just ran away with the Crazy Lawsuit of the Year award, suing the Michael Jackson estate for $50 million. Considering the number of people popping out of the woodwork to posthumously sue the King of Pop, this in itself is not surprising. But just wait.
In the past, Helen Harris-Scott has accused Jackson of wiretapping her phone, placing tracking devices in her vehicle and hiring “organized criminals” to watch her. She also once said that Jackson communicated to her through his music. Let’s count the minutes until this suit gets thrown out of court.

Kate Gosselin Wins Round 1
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Television, Break-ups, Divorce, Legal Issues, Rivalries, Where Are They Now?
Everything that’s been going on thus far was merely a warm-up to the real Jon and Kate Gosselin war, which got underway this week in court. So far, Kate’s ahead thanks to a ruling made by Judge Arthur R. Tilson.
For now, Jon Gosselin has been ordered to return $180,000 of the $235,000 he’s withdrawn from the joint bank account. According to Kate Gosselin lawyer Mark Momjian, Jon has to pony up the dough by October 26. “As difficult as this has been for me, I am pleased that the court has ruled fairly on behalf of myself and my children,” said Kate.
Let’s just pause for a second and really think about the staggering sum of $235,000, an amount which many Americans don’t earn even two years’ of work. As a matter of fact, the average firefighter/EMT earned approximately $47,000 annually in 2003…and they save lives.

Someone Else Sues Michael Jackson
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Child Stars, Legal Issues
Michael Jackson has even more legal trouble dead than alive - and that’s really saying something.
It all began when Julien’s Auction House put around 170 items up on the block, a Michael Jackson collection that was bid upon by one Richard Lapointe. The auction, however, was canceled. As a result, Lapointe is suing the Jackson estate and the auction house.
The suit contends that Lapointe was the only bidder on 82 items in the collection, and further mentions that he might have been the highest bidder on 88 more items. Since Julien’s sent confirmation of Lapointe’s bid on these items, he thinks he’s entitled to some money.

Chris Brown Makes Plea Deal in Assault Case
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Legal Issues

A last-minute plea agreement has spared Rihanna from the witness stand and Chris Brown from jail.
Shortly before today’s preliminary hearing on Brown’s assault charges, the singer reached a deal that would place the the 20-year-old on five years probation. Chris was also ordered to perform six months of community labor back in his home state of Virginia. Any violation could place the musician behind bars for four years.
Although it was reported that the judge had ordered Brown to stay away from his victim, the Los Angeles Times says Rihanna is not interested in that condition.

So You Think You Can Dance Choreographer Accused of Rape
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Television, Legal Issues
UPDATE: Prosecutors have not yet filed any charges. Da Silva will be released while the investigation continues.
This FOX scandal might just top anything ever connected to American Idol.
Over the weekend, So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Alex Da Silva was taken in by police on suspicion of sexual assault. The arrest stemmed from alleged incidents involving four different women.
Although the 41-year-old salsa dancer had been previously accused of sexual assault in 2003, 2004 and 2005, charges were never filed by the prosecutors office. After a new complaint on March 28, the LAPD went back and reinterviewed Alex’s previous accusers. Similar stories filed by all four women - all unknown to each other - led to Saturday’s arrest.
“The victims allege that he lured them to his homes in North Hollywood and Van Nuys,” a statement from the police department read. “He then used a ruse to get them into his bedroom, where he raped them.”

The Latest News on Chris Brown and Rihanna
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Legal Issues

The drama for Rihanna and Chris Brown continues one day after their Grammy Awards cancellations. Here is where things stand at this point:
- The $50,0000 bail Chris posted might not be the only financial hit the singer takes. Although the company has not completely severed ties with the 19-year-old, Wrigley has decided to pull the Doublemint Gum commercials featuring Brown. (Too bad they missed the one that actually aired during the Grammys yesterday.) A company spokesman told Us that they are waiting to see how things play out. “We believe Mr. Brown should be afforded the same due process as any citizen,” the rep explained.

Britney Spears: A Passenger in Her Own Life
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Child Stars, Legal Issues, Rumors
Papers were filed Monday with the L.A. Superior Court that have pretty well sealed the fate of one Britney Spears, who from now on will no longer be the captain of her own ship. That’s right - Daddy’s got control, and he’s going to keep it.
Jamie Spears has officially been awarded permanent conservatorship, or guardianship, of daughter Britney. He’ll determine what to do with her finances, career and personal life from now on…until the agreement is severed through death or the court system. Spears now has the legal right to pull the strings on Brit’s life, even to “restrict and limit visitors by any means.”
Seriously, does this sound a little ominous to anyone else?
Jamie Spears reportedly received a raise for his guardianship role recently, getting bumped up to $75 per hour. The raise gave him an income hike of about $51,000 annually. Now, he makes around 16 large per month just to hold Brit’s hand, tell her what to do and in general run her life. Basically, he’s getting paid to take care of his daughter. ...Is it me, or is that weird?
Lord Acton’s words from 1887 are often paraphrased into a famous quote which I think is relevant here:
“Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
